Puzzle Piece 1b

"At

The fifth watch, in the first flush

Of dawn, I close the curtain

Of the study. During the

Rest of the Night I listen

To the ice, warping the Colored

Tiles of the roof."

Summary:

This poem is about a person who in the beginning of the day (dawn) closed the curtains in the study. For the rest of the night, they sit, or maybe even lay listening to the ice on the roof.

Possibility of what’s happening in the poem:

this person was experiencing a great high point in their life, where they were doing something that they never did before, and something happened and it ended the experience and left the person sitting and wondering what went wrong.

In line two the word "first" makes me think beginning. This triggers positive feelings in me because you can start off fresh and new. I also think of history and people be the first to do something that has never been done. This causes a hopeful feeling within me, the audience.

the words in Line three, "close the curtain" make me think of the end of a performance or a theater show when the curtains are being closed on the actors. This connects to the previous line because the first, or the beginning is now coming to an end with the closing of the curtains. This makes me feel gloomy.

The word,"Study", in line four makes me think knowledge, and education. A study is a room kind of like a library or a den. I picture a room with a bunch of books and a nice comfy chair. Possible theme: Knowledge, wisdom. The literary technique being used is imagery.

Line five, "Rest of the Night I listen" leads me to believe This person must be restless and can’t get to sleep. This cause me to feel weary and restless.

the word "ice" in line six makes me think of cold. It must be winter, because you mainly get ice in the winter. When I think of ice, I think of being sick. This makes me feel weary
